About Science on Tap

Science on Tap is a monthly event held at the Wolverine Letterpress & Publick House that fosters a casual atmosphere where open and informal discussion can occur between scientists and members of the community.

Science on Tap gives local researchers and scientists a chance to talk about what they do and communicate the importance of their research to the general public.

Discussion between speakers and audience members is always highly encouraged.

Occasionally, we also hold special talks that focus on in the news science topics in order to help disseminate factual, useful and timely information.

The event is free and no background knowledge is needed. We only ask that you bring an open mind and respectful attitude.

Meg Hemmerlein

Meg Hemmerlein

PhD Candidate

Hailing from the hills of New Hampshire, Meg is currently a PhD candidate at CSU. Her research focuses on how animals (and people!) adapt to high-elevation environments while they are pregnant. She hopes to help understand gestational diseases like preeclampsia. When you can't find her in the lab, Meg enjoys skiing and mountain biking.

Favorite beer: Hazy IPAs or porters!

Dr. Mark Zabel

Dr. Mark Zabel

Faculty

Dr. Mark Zabel is Professor and Associate Director of the Prion Research Center, Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Pathology, and Research Associate Dean in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University. He earned a PhD in Experimental Pathology from the University of Utah School of Medicine, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. Adriano Aguzzi at the Institute for Neuropathology, University Hospital of Zürich, Switzerland. Dr. Zabel's research focuses on prion immunology, pathology, diagnostics and therapeutics. His lab developed nonviral delivery platforms using lipid nanoparticles to deliver transcript-suppressing and gene-editing tools to neural cells to decrease prion protein expression that negatively impacts prion replication to prevent terminal prion disease.

I have been working at CSU for 10 years. I currently work in the Clinical Sciences Department where I am immersed in science and research daily. I have been involved with SoT for over 5 years, helping to organize and share information each month. I love this event for its ability to connect scientists with the community, fostering engaging conversations and making research accessible to everyone. I grew up in Fort Collins and enjoy camping, reading, cooking and family!
